THIS is the shit I want from him you guys. No more clever artsy stuff. No more unconvincing foreign accents. No more Oscar bait. Adam Driver belongs on a spaceship, wielding silly sci-fi weapons and getting beaten up. HE HAS A KID TO LOOK AFTER THIS TIME. AND THERE ARE DINOSAURS. AND DANNY ELFMAN IS DOING THE SCORE.

Date: 2022-12-19 05:15 am (UTC)The Last Duel was fantastic, wasn’t it? I loved it so much I went and read the book as well - which had loads more interesting info about medieval law, though by necessity (actual thorough scholarship rather than adaptational entertainment) Marguerite had much less of a voice.
But a lot of Adam Driver’s project choices are just too quirky for me, lol. I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch Gucci or Annette, for instance.

Haven’t seen Gucci or Annette either (but I confess, I’m such an arthouse snob, usually - if it’s not some depressing Austrian Ulrich Seidl film or some fancy pants experimental documentary I won’t bother going to the cinema… unless it’s a guilty pleasure, of course… ahem ☺️).

Date: 2022-12-19 07:15 am (UTC)I LOVED the Rashomon structure so much. And the “his version/his version/the truth” frame that put Marguerite so fully in charge of her story the way she deserves. It could so easily have been either misery porn or a lecture, but it dodged both risks and managed to say something really powerful.
I’m so impressed by arthouse snobs, haha. I hardly ever watch movies to begin with - I’m a laughing stock among my friends for how many of those “universal” movies I’ve never seen - but on the rare occasions I do drag myself to the cinema, it’s usually for some trashy blockbuster. 😅
