Music, metal and otherwise
May. 30th, 2022 09:34 amFirst, the otherwise: My Chemical Romance have released their first new material since 2014! It's impossible to overstate how big a deal this band was to me in high school (like oh my god, I was so obnoxious about them, thank fuck the pseud under which I posted all my terrible RPF is lost to the sands of time) and I may be a grown adult but somewhere inside me there's a teenage girl who still knows Gerard Way is the only person who truly understands her. In other words, I'm excited. The new song is like distilled essence of MCR - it reminds me most strongly of The Black Parade era, but with undertones of Three Cheers angst and breezy Danger Days defiance. As if to cover all bases, they even threw in a Bullets-era reference to 9/11.
Next, the metal: 1914 have shared their cover of Hero of War by Rise Against, previously only available on a special edition vinyl. Like the rest of the 1914 discography, it's hitting a bit different right now given what's happening to the band's homeland. I've had their latest album on repeat all year and it's wonderful to have a taste of new content! They've put their own unique stamp on a song that's very different from their usual material, and the result is so fucking powerful.
Nothing else new has been tickling my fancy lately - I thought I was going to be giving a positive mention to a new Rise to the Sky album, but I went back to relisten and bounced off it. Not sure if strange mood now or strange mood the last time I heard it, but free time is too scarce at the moment to spend on music that doesn't immediately grab my by the throat.
Finally, the belly dancing! Turns out metal belly dancing is a thing that exists, in the form of Diana Bastet, an insanely talented dancer who makes her own costumes and is also by coincidence Ukrainian (I mean, slava Ukraini, but I'm not even specifically trying to build a Ukrainian metal rec post - their talent just dominates). Here she is dancing to one of my favourite Rotting Christ songs:
