Ohhhhh, man, 'good mother' standards are a sexist deathtrap from which I doubt I'll ever fully succeed at disentangling myself. It's all so transparently silly and unreasonable, but the pull is just too strong. I can easily imagine 'good wife' standards falling into the same emotional space. If it's the role you're required by society to play either way, why wouldn't you dream of excelling at it?
I think you'd enjoy Udolpho! It definitely turned some of my expectations on their head, and the new perspective on Northanger Abbey is very fun. :D
