Dear Trick-or-Treater

Thanks so much for creating for me! In general, I’m easy to please and hard to disappoint. As long as my gift features something I’ve mentioned wanting, I’m going to be delighted no matter where else inspiration takes you along the way – so please don't stress about whether your idea is too dark, too niche, too shippy/not shippy enough, whatever. I'm also fine with any past or background relationships or other supporting characters you want to include. If you're looking at my letter thinking 'hmm, she hasn't mentioned [thing], but it doesn't seem wildly out of line with her tastes' - your instincts are good, you should include the thing, I bet I'll love it. :D

If a prompt seems to suggest a longer story, I’d also be thrilled with a short scene or excerpt based on that concept. Ditto, if a prompt sounds fic-oriented, please feel free to adapt it to your preferred use. I'm requesting both fic and art for everything and I'm totally open to treats in other media.

In general, my favourite stories are the ones where the characters feel like real, live, messy and imperfect people. I love fics that are thought-provoking or uncomfortable to read. I love to relax into well-earned (or not-so-well-earned) moments of happiness for my otherwise beleaguered faves. I love to laugh. Favourite themes include:

• anything with a strong character focus
• characters who are flawed and abrasive and challenging to love; difficult or dysfunctional relationships
• any level of shippiness or non-shippiness: pre-ship, relationships that don't work out or gennish plot-based fic with my requested ship as a secondary focus are all a-okay with me
• dark/gritty/moody aesthetics
• imperfect happiness, bittersweetness, unfulfilled yearning
• complicated, bittersweet twists on seemingly fluffy premises
• ensemble casts, background characters, outsider POV
• competence porn, especially of the ’walking human disaster is also breathtakingly competent’ variety
• mundane details, little moments of human vulnerability
• politics, bureaucracy, propaganda
• banter, snark, gallows humour, quippiness
• guilty pleasures: denying them, suppressing them, and finally giving into temptation

💀 Dark likes
I love my dark themes both overt and covert - if you're not feeling the in-your-face disasterfest, by all means creep me out with subtle insinuations or dark twists to sweet-seeming premises. Some favourite themes:

• unreliable narrators
• characters doing terrible things for sympathetic reasons
• grey morality, antiheroes, villain-centred morality
• extremist politics, callous bureaucracies, the mundane horrors of life under the jackboot
• 'ugly' mental illness: violence, paranoia, self-destructiveness, warped thinking
• self-harm, suicide attempts or ideation
• psychological horror
• coercion, blackmail, abuse of power
• victim blaming
• self-harm, self-destructiveness, suicide attempts
• physical torture: flogging, beating, burrning, bone-breaking, electrocuting
• psychological/'enhanced interrogation' style torture: sleep deprivation, solitary confinement, stress positions, extreme noise and temperature, deliberate humiliation.

🍑 Smut likes
In general I love sex that says something about the people involved, that's awkward and imperfect and humanising. Specific sex acts are less important to me than characterisation: I'm ready and eager to be sold on pretty much any kink if it's being used as a lens to bring my faves’ desires, beliefs, motives, hangups and relationship skills (or lack thereof) into focus.

Some dynamics I’m reliably weak for:

• I can’t believe I get to touch this exquisite goddess, I’m so overwhelmed
• Ugh this jerk drives me mad but I can’t seem to keep my hands off them
• I’m an actual human disaster and this sex is going to have to make up for the therapy I’m not getting
• This love is forbidden and could ruin my life but I just can’t resist.

🎨 Art likes
Any of my fic likes that can translate visually are just as relevant to my taste in art. For any of my ficcier prompts or favourite tropes, I'd be over the moon to receive an illustration from the hypothetical fic that fills them. I love shadowy colour palettes and dark/gothy/edgy styles and an overall moody gloom. I love symbolism and meaningful visual motifs, and I'm open to oblique, metaphorical depictions of ships just as much as pictures of people kissing. (But I am also, to be clear, still very keen on pictures of people kissing.) Action scenes are great. Weapons are great. Costume porn is great. Cool locations and eye-catching props or backgrounds are great.

On a different note, fluffy art is also amazing. I love chibis, cuddle piles and all manner of sugary cuteness. Polka dots or rainbows in the background just because? You son of a bitch, I'm in. My ship holds hands in the background while their new pet hamster frolics across most of the canvas? Just make sure that little guy's cheeks are as chubby as they come! Throw my grumpy black-clad faves into a scene of lollipops and sparkles? I'll squeal so much that even my ship's new pet hamster will think I'm shrill. I also adore that trend of tiny chibi characters with food items larger than they are.

For explicit art, I've no objection to seeing genitals, but they're never really the main draw for me, if that makes sense? I'm more interested in what's going on with the characters' bodies overall, the feelings of intimacy and need and desire between them, and most especially in the expressions on their faces. I prefer natural, “flawed” bodies over Hollywood-perfect ones, so please feel free and encouraged to include details that a Playboy photographer might have preferred to airbrush out!

The Hurricane Wars

❤️ Alaric Ossinast

There are exactly two things my heart dearly wants:

1) Whump this poor beautiful man! Whump him so hard! I want more brutally abusive Gaheris. More Talasyn-will-never-love-me angst. More grief for his mother and fear for his nation’s future and exhaustion from the long, grinding war. I want to wallow in all the bad things canon has done to him and I want to see him suffer even worse things that will grind him down to his component atoms. He hurts so pretty.

2) Give this poor beautiful man a break! He has suffered so much and I want him to have all the nice things. More of him enjoying sugary treats and all the unfamiliar luxuries Nenavar has to offer. More of his relationship with Talasyn growing closer and more tender, more of him earning her respect, her trust, her love. More of Sevraim making him smile against his will behind the mask.

Basically, if your work lands anywhere on the hurt/comfort spectrum – from all-hurt to all-comfort or anywhere in between – I’m going to be delighted.

The Love Hypothesis / Deep End

🧡 Adam Carlsen

I don’t care at all about Adam being a Kylo Ren expy, but I do care very much about him looking like Adam Driver! Ali likes to focus on his height and muscles, which is all well and good, but if you’re game to bring in some more of the slightly off-kilter facial features and overall polarising “is he handsome or ugly” look then I’d be even more thrilled.

Some prompts:

- Little snapshots of Olive’s life through Adam’s eyes, back before The Night when he was pining for her from afar. I’d like to see all the beautiful things he sees in her and all the emotionally stunted reasons he can’t possibly approach.

- Adam and Olive collaborate on a research project. I’d love to see them figuring out how to manage the power imbalance stemming from different levels of experience, and work together as genuine academic equals.

- More of Adam’s traumatic grad school backstory – his supervisor’s abuse, Tom’s manipulation, the sleepless nights and ever-shifting goalposts and constant, overwhelming sense of powerlessness and inadequacy.

- Outsider perspective: let’s see Adam’s colleagues reacting to this weird new thing he has going with a random grad, or Olive’s friends being their most nosy selves at him, or his own students experiencing the moody, scary side of him that Olive never sees.

- Olive is unbearable about Halloween. Pumpkin everything!

Some less PG prompts:

- Pre-canon, Adam experiments with Holden. He discovers for sure that he’s NOT bisexual, but it makes for a good story later once the unbearable awkwardness has worn off.

- Pre-canon, Adam jerks off fantasising vividly about Olive and wallows in his own patheticness.

- Olive decides to mess with Adam’s composure by sucking him almost all the way off before a big presentation then forcing him to go out in public once he’s right on the edge of falling apart.


Ship: Lukas Blomqvist & Adam Carlsen & Olive Smith & Scarlett Vandermeer (Deep End)

🧡 The Adam and Olive cameos were far and away my favourite part of Deep End. I really enjoyed getting to see them both through the eyes of their students, Adam's unpleasantness (that melted away when Scarlett earned his intellectual respect) and Olive's sunniness (I bet she's one of the best-loved academics in the faculty!). I'd love to see more of them mentoring Scarlett and/or Lukas (and while I've requested all four characters, I'll be just as happy if you'd rather focus one student & prof combo). Or maybe the undergrads get caught up in some kind of faculty social event (no doubt Olive's doing) or joint Adam and Olive research venture. Maybe Olive DOES let Adam poach Scarlett for his lab after all. Maybe Scarlett or Lukas is inspired by them to pivot to a PhD program instead of medical school (and oh man, wouldn't THAT be a dramatic change, given how rigid they both are about their life planning?).

Romance between Lukas/Scarlett and Adam/Olive are extremely welcome. I'm also of course completely happy with gen, and you can feel free to dispose of the canonical Lukas/Scarlett romance however you like, but please don't explicitly break up Adam and Olive's marriage! If you're not vibing them as a couple, I'd rather you just not mention the issue at all - maybe Scarlett never noticed them together at the competition that time, and she and Lukas just continue to assume they're normal colleagues. :)

Star Wars (Sequels and Comics)

💛 Poe Dameron/Finn/Rey/Ben Solo | Kylo Ren

Ben survives Exegol. Now comes the really awkward part: figuring out how to live with the other half of his dyad and her friends who he's given every possible reason to hate him. Team missions to clean up what's left of the First Order? Dysfunctional New New Republic politics? Quiet but unavoidably enmeshed civilian lives? I'm up for anything!

I'm pretty relaxed about the exact relationship configuration here. Ensemble of allies with their black sheep ex-enemy is what I'm after, but I'll be just as happy if you focus more on certain subsets of characters than others, make the poly relationship lopsided or non-mutual, or include other characters in the polycule as well. (Jacen can come too! Rose can come too! Kaz and Synara and Tam and Phasma and Voe and Suralinda and [your fave] can come too!)

Some sub-dynamics I particularly like are Rey and Ben having a volatile but irresistible connection, the trio having some form of three's-a-crowd energy (Poe and Finn uniting under the 'wtf is Rey doing with Kylo Ren' banner; Finn as the peace-loving middleman between Rey and Poe's frenemy tendencies; Poe struggling to understand Rey and Finn's shared Force sensitivity, etc); and everyone being kind of mad about their attraction to Ben but just not being able to help themselves.

Also relevant to my interests: AU Ben who never technically fell to the dark side but is still complicated and kind of a jerk. I especially love stories where he takes more after his father than his mother vis-à-vis respectable career/lifestyle choices.


💛 Tava Ren

I nominated Tava on the slender off-chance that anyone else is as wildly excited about this brand new, basically unknown character as I am. I'll come back and add thoughts/prompts to this letter after the next issue drops and we actually know anything about her, but I can already tell you I'll be down for any of the following:

• Backstory, whether or not it ends up being canon compliant! Tell me all about how Tava came to lead the Knights of Ren and who she was before she joined up.
• Shipping her with Kylo (even if he ends up killing her in canon, though I'd love that hypothetical fate softened so she still gets to survive).
• An AU where instead of solving the Kylo Problem by confronting him head-on, she decides to confront it by offering the Resistance some very morally questionable aid in exchange for their protection or their help taking Kylo down. (Maybe she ends up having wicked chemistry with Rey, or Rose, or Zorii, or Voe who in my expansive Star Wars ur-headcanon is also alive and helping the Resistance.)
• Costume porn art, or art that accentuates her gorgeous red hair and badass combat skills, or actually any art at all please draw my new fave she's so gorgeous and she deserves it.

Basically, I'm a simple woman with simple needs, and Tava is a GORGEOUS woman with powers and an all-black outfit and a deeply regrettable worldview. I already love her so much and I'm going to love whatever you do with her.

Update post-issue #9: Yeah okay, so, everything I said above still holds: I ADORE her, I'd love literally any fic or art about her whether using the prompts above or your own idea, and in particular I ship her like burning with Kylo. He's fascinated! He knows damn well she's trying to play him, but he's so lonely and so desperate for a companion who understands the Force like he does, and he's on the rebound from Rey, and Tava's right, he really doesn't want the job he's got right now even if he can't admit it to himself. Falling for Tava is a terrible idea in every possible way and we all know how Kylo feels about bad ideas. I'm here for him caving in to temptation and reconciling with the Knights of Ren after all, because wreaking havoc with them and letting Tava play him like a fiddle is the literal only fun he ever has anymore. But FYI this is not an OTP situation, I am also ready to ship Tava with ANYONE OR NO ONE. Seducing Kylo didn't work, so she tries Rey instead? Hux gets wind of a potential ally for his anti-Kylo Ren schemes? Somehow, Phasma returned? Forget the romance altogether, Tava has her eyes on a promising new job and her Knights will just have to get past their fear of Kylo and follow her anyway? The fun part of having next to no canon to work for is that the possibilities are endless. :DDD Do literally whatever you like with her, I'll love it.


💛 Voe

I love Voe's quick temper and determination, her competitive streak and her bitter struggle to fit herself into the serene Jedi mould. She may not have a Skywalker's innate strength in the Force, but she aims high and works hard and never resigns herself to coming in second. I'd have loved to see more about her in the comics - where she's from, how she ended up at the temple, who she might have become if not for her untimely end.

Let her survive! Seriously, I'm here for any version of Voe surviving the minemoon and going on to play a role in or after the events of the sequel movies. Maybe she joins the Resistance and sparks fly between her and Rey or Rose or Suralinda or Zorii or Synara or Tam or any one of the badass women kicking around in the Resistance's orbit during the war. Maybe she shows up after Exegol and is aghast to find Ben Solo there as well, "redeemed" after all he did to her. Maybe the trauma drives her to the dark side, either in pursuit of revenge against Kylo specifically or more generally to avoid ever feeling vulnerable like that again. Maybe Kylo recruits her instead of killing her, and she joins the Knights of Ren or the First Order. Maybe she gives up on being a Jedi and slinks off to the criminal underworld instead - I'd be so down for shipping her with Qi'ra or Aphra or any other female crime lord (and yes, I'm fine with the big age gap!).

I'd also be very into an AU where the minemoon incident never happened at all, either because Ben never fell and they became Jedi together, or because Voe dropped out of Jedi school before that point. Maybe her temper or competitive streak got the better of her, and instead of continuing to beat her head against that brick wall, she uses her semi-developed Force powers to help her build a new career as a [stunt pilot who pulls off tricks no one else can / journalist who somehow always knows where the next scoop is / smuggler who's eerily good at avoiding patrols / politician who no one can seem to resist supporting once they've talked to her / insert other cool career here]!
